Showered With Love

My Mom threw me me a beautiful baby shower this weekend. She opened her home and we celebrated with family and a few friends-thank you Mom and Dad for a beautiful day! I also got to visit with my friends Molly and Hillary who I haven't seen in such a long time. I got to meet Hillary's daughter Isabella- which might have been the best gift of the day :) Thank you to everyone who made the trip and spoiled our family!

So Glad to be Here

I was looking through some old documents on my computer and I came across this journal entry I had written about a procedure I had when we were going through our fertility testing. I AM SO GLAD TO BE HERE. I am now 29 weeks pregnant and our babies are growing healthy. It's hard to always to trust that things will work out in their own time. But here's a testiment to how blessed we've been on this journey.

Office Visit: Endometrial Biopsy (Sometime in December of 2007)

I wake up nervous. I had thought the HSG was going to be no big deal and I almost passed out after that procedure. Luckily my mother in law insisted on driving me. The cramping afterwards was pretty intense; I hadn’t expected it at all. This time I want to be prepared for what I’m getting into. I Google ‘endometrial biopsy.’ Shit. These women say they pain is so bad they should have been put to sleep. One blogger posts, ‘I screamed and dug my feet into the exam table. My asshole doctor just kept going while tears were streaming down my face.’ Seriously? This is what I read and I have an hour before my appointment. I start to freak out. Another woman says to take a vicodin beforehand. I don’t have vicodin so I down three ibuprofen while accepting my fate.

Today I’m having an endometrial biopsy, a cheek swab, and I’m dropping off Mike’s swimmers for a Kruger’s test. I am instantly self-conscious when people want to know in detail what each of these test are. I try to listen to Dr. X’s explanation but all I’m really thinking is ‘please don’t start crying, please don’t start crying…’. Yes, he’s a good doctor and I like him. But the circumstances are awful. I don’t want to talk to him about my fertility. I don’t want to hear about my uterine Velcro and the tenacity of my husband’s sperm. Starting a family should be between me and Mike. I don’t want to talk about timing and frequency and our history. But I need this doctor. Because I can’t do it without help. There’s something wrong. We don’t work. I don’t work. So when I try to understand what these tests are about, all I can think is…I’m broken. I know I should be educated about my body and this process. So I get home and Google each of the things I’ve done and I’m going to do. I get it, mostly, but I’m flustered when I try to explain it to anyone else.

So I turn the computer off thinking these women are either pussies or I’m screwed. Dr. X. told me to drink a LOT of water before my appointment, but nothing within the hour of my procedure- that would mess with the cheek swab test. I tend to take things he says literally and I’m on my way to SLO and I have to pee SOOOOOO bad. No biggie, I think, I’m sure they wanted me to have a full bladder to a pregnancy test before the procedure. I had also read that this procedure would cause a miscarriage if I were already pregnant. I get to the office, early of course. I hate that. It’s not like I want to spend extra time in that waiting room. I just get freaked out before my appointments so I rush over the grade. I check in with *Alice and pray that I start having nice thoughts towards her. I don’t know why, but I do not care for the receptionist. I know I am not his only patient, but I feel like when I call she should at least fake recognition at my name. ‘Hi Alice, this is Meghan Beck calling,’ ‘Yes?’ Nothing, no ‘Hello Meghan.’

I walk up to the desk and she shuffles papers and then looks up at me. ‘Can I help you?’ ‘Hi Alice, I’m Meghan Beck and I have an appointment at 10:00.’ She finally smiles and tells me to have a seat. I really do have to pee. I try to think about something else. Anything but the fact that I’m in an office because I can’t have a baby. The sign in front of Alice’s desk says,

‘People don’t remember what you say, they remember how you make them feel’
Why does she make me feel so bad?

Alice finally gets up and brings me back to the exam room. She tells me to unrobe, waist down, then shuts the door. I drop my undies and wrap the tissue-like robe around me. Where should I sit? I guess on the exam table? Now I’m lying down and I stare at the ceiling. The whole room is painted in this horrible mauve color. The walls had to have been white at some point, but someone thought it would be nice to pick a warm, pretty color. But mauve? Really?

My bladder could not be fuller and I have to pee so badly. As I’m lying here I start thinking about the last procedure I had, the HSG. It started out ok and then the cramps started. The blog posts I read earlier this morning start to haunt me. Don’t think about it. Think about something else. I start to contemplate how long it’s been since I’ve had a bikini wax. Wait, that’s embarrassing that I’m thinking that. The doctor doesn’t care. Alice couldn’t possibly care (can you imagine what hers looks like?)

There’s a quick knock on the door and Dr. X. comes in followed by Alice. Surprise! Today she’s doubling as a receptionist and assistant. Dr. X. makes small chat but I’m not really listening. It’s actually quite impressive how calm I appear. I even make some joke and he laughs but all I’m thinking is can I pee yet? Apparently there is no pregnancy test. Dr. X. explains the endometrial biopsy; a way to look at the health of my cells and to determine if my uterus has the velcro needed to reproduce. I nod and he reaches for a big contraption. I hate this part of the deal. In the cheesiest voice I’ve ever hear, Dr. X. says, ‘Okey-dokey Madame (yes, he says Madame). Gently spread your legs as if your knees are going to touch the walls.’ I want to start laughing but all I can think is let’s get this over with.

The apparatus that looks like a dildo is actually an ultrasound device and now it’s Doctors turn to laugh. ‘You certainly took my advice!’ he says. ‘Would you look at how full your bladder is?’ There’s no need to look, I’m thinking. I’m well aware of the fact that I might pee on this table. Dr. X. then goes on to explain that with a full bladder, this procedure will only be slightly uncomfortable. Oh? Now he has my attention. I brace myself as he clamps me open. So far so good. Now he begins to insert something that looks like a catheter. Uncomfortable, but nothing like those other women had said. I start to relax. Wait! It hurts! He wildly pushes it up and down, scraping my uterus. I’m afraid. I remember one woman posted that the doctor’s assistant had held her hand during the procedure. I turn my head and look at Alice. She doesn’t respond so I just close my eyes. ‘Only a few more minutes,’ says Dr. X. I can do this.

It’s uncomfortable but not excruciating. I go to my peaceful place. ‘Jesus, Jesus, you’re name is like honey on my lips,’ I sing the words in my head, ‘Your spirit’s like water to my soul.’ Ever since I was a little girl I have sung this song to soothe myself when I’m afraid. ‘Your word is a lamp unto my feet, Jesus I love you, I love you.’ I sang this as a child playing hide and go seek, then as a young woman in my new dorm room away from home. Now I sing to God in a doctor’s office having my womb scraped because I can’t make a baby. Jesus, I’m scared. Thank you for meeting me right now, whispering to me that I’m not alone.

‘Madame, you did magnificently!’ Dr. X. says I did good. He takes everything out and it’s all I can do to wait for them to leave before I pull my clothes on and rush to the bathroom. I’m sitting on the toilet for what seems like forever and I’m relieved. It’s done. As I sit here I feel guilty for being annoyed when the Doc calls me Madame and I am ashamed that I have judged Alice. I am lucky that Dr. X. is my doctor. He is an expert and he knew that a full bladder would make this a more comfortable procedure. Those other woman have not had my experience and I am grateful that I have been treated with care.

I return to the office and he scrapes my cheeks with a q-tip for the cheek swab part of the appointment. We then move to the lab room where he lets me check out Mike’s guys under a microscope. Apparently he has ‘champion swimmers,’ but some of them are abnormal. Not to worry, Dr. X. tells me, we can select healthy ones. Now we talk about ‘the next step.’ In vitro fertilization, IVF.

I ask when we will really get to start. I can’t bare to get my hopes up again. I thought we were doing IVF months ago, only to find out we had more testing to do. And then more. During our last visit we had talked about IVF and Dr. X. told us he would transfer two or three embryos. This automatically put us at ease. He told us that he does not like to ‘play God.’ Even though it is achievable, he does not do gender selection. Mike and I left that appointment hopeful and excited. I desperately wanted to go with three embryos, but I thought Mike would want two. I started picturing multiples and my heart was overwhelmed with the possibility. That night Mike and I were in the spa under the stars. I braced myself and asked Mike how many embryos he thought we should transfer. THREE!!! He said THREE!!! We knew that the chances are not certain that I would be pregnant with three, but it would increase our odds for having twins. He wants the same as me! We both want three! He is the best husband ever and we might have three babies!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

I tell Dr. X. that if we get to move forward with IVF, after we get these results back, Mike and I want to transfer three embryos. I swell with pride and feel like we are about to create our family. He looks at me and shakes his head. What? Why is he shaking his head? ‘No. Two for you.’ What? WTF? Why two for me? What’s wrong with me? Why two for me and three for others? What? ‘You are young and the chances for a successful transfer are high. There are too many complications with three. Two for you.’ Oh. Two. Which means probably one. Instantly I feel as if I’m on the outside again. Someone else is deciding my future.

I thank Dr. X. and hand over $1000.00 to Alice for today’s visit. I step outside the office and make it to the elevator before I burst into tears. It’s too much. I can’t even gage my emotions. In the past two hours I have felt frightened, sarcastic, edgy, relieved, thankful, hopeful, then protective and confused. I get in my car and I am devastated. Not only because we’re going to try for two, but because I just came from an office where I have to depend on someone else to help make my baby. Because I don’t have the $1000.00 I just wrote a check for. Because every night I fall asleep with my heart aching for children. Because I have this void and there is nothing that my husband can do or say to comfort me. Because Mike does not bat an eye at the thousands of dollars this is costing us. Because when he looks at me I see he wants it too. Because it is taking so very long and I feel like we’re stuck. Because in actuality, it was a good visit. It didn’t hurt horribly and there is hope we are one step closer. For all these reasons, I sit in my car and cry.

My Mom

Today is your Birthday! Your day to be spoiled, as you spoil us every day. Every year I appreciate you more. Most girls think they've got a great Mom....but I have the BEST Mom. You know what I need when I can't articulate it. In my saddest and happiest moments, I still want my Mom. Thank you for always being consistent. Thank you for taking care of me, taking care of my family. You cook for us, clean for us, shop for us- always smiling and telling us it is your pleasure. I am so lucky that you are my Mom. I mentally take notes and hope that I take care of my children the way you bless us. I. Love. You. Happy Birthday my mother, my friend.

Changes

Feels like lots of changes...and no changes all at the same time. Tomorrow I would normally be starting back to work. Tonight I would be thinking about certain students, knowing their circumstances, and wondering how things went for them over break. But instead I'm at home lying on the couch or in bed. I'm glad because my body is tired when I'm out- it's just a weird feeling. I hope I can continue with this type of bed rest. I'm still allowed out for a couple hours a day. I know other people who were (Mom) on bed rest literally could not leave their bed. I am appreciative that so far I still have freedom to move in moderation.

We rang in the New Year the best way I could imagine. Out to dinner for burgers and fries, and in bed to watch TV by 9:00. What a difference a year makes. New Years was my birthday. The big 28, and Mike and I had an awesome day. I used my allotted time out of the house and we toured our two local hospitals. We felt good about both of them. It gave me this unbelievable feeling of, 'This is really happening.' We went out to lunch and Mike spent the rest of the day relaxing with me. It was good to have company on the couch :)

Our remodel is progressing. Below are pictures of Little Maegann's room finished. The photos don't show just how cute it is. I'm telling you...CUTE! And the floors are beautiful! Click for a reminder of the before pics.

Below is Meg's old room...the new nursery. Here are before pictures. Can't wait until this room takes shape. We're painting it brown and white. It's going to be so stinking cute.

Pregnant: 27 Weeks

Baby boy's face looking at us. Sister is being bashful as usual, giving us the back of her head

Dear Babies,
Hello sweet ones. We just celebrated our first Christmas with you in our lives. I kept thinking that at this time next year we get to introduce you to our family traditions and create new ones. At 27 weeks we are becoming quite the cozy threesome. I feel you moving constantly! At our Dr. appointment last week we saw that you had done a somersault baby girl! Your brother's head had been down, while yours had been up, but now you are both feet up dancing in my tummy. The doctor told me I am done with work. My back hurts and I continue to feel a lot of pressure so I am officially on modified bed rest. You are so fragile and special that we have to do everything we can to keep you growing inside me. It feels bittersweet. Part of me is not ready to give up working, but then I realize it is not about me anymore. It is about you two....and that makes everything OK. So do keep me company these last few months as we relax and grow together. Our family is doing an awesome job taking care of us. They are shopping, cooking and cleaning. Your Dad is working hard balancing it all and finishing the house so that once you get here you can have all our attention. We talk to you all the time. Can you hear us? We tell you how much we love you and how excited we are to finally meet you. I pray for you and ask the Lord to give you the gift of joy. My wish for you is to have the spirit of laughter and contentment. You babies still have me craving hot chocolate from Starbucks. It's horribly overpriced and unpractical, but I really don't want to upset you so I suppose I should continue to give in :) Your Dad took your sister snowboarding for the weekend so I am on my way to Santa Maria to lay on the couch and get spoiled by your Grandma. We will be very comfortable! Love you so much.

Mom Readers...Help!

A few people have graciously offered to give me a baby shower. This is wonderful, right? I went online to check out registries and realized...oh no. I'm going to be a Mom and I don't know a thing about baby products. So I thought to myself, no biggie. People do this all the time. Let's start with bottles. (I plan to breastfeed but surely I'll need bottles for pumping, etc.). So I type in bottles. Apparently there are 1,500,852 types of bottles to chooses from. And then came the nipples. Really? This many nipples? So I ask you, what are your favorite baby products? Diaper genies, slings, breast pumps? What did you get but never use? What did you wish you would have registered for? Specific brands? Models? Product Numbers? (I'm only half joking when I ask for product numbers). I could register for cute accessories and receiving blankets all day long, but what about the important stuff? If you have any thoughts, please list them under comments. You just click under the post where it says comments and click the bubble that says 'anonymous' or 'name,' fill in your name, and show me the light. Thanks!

Merry Christmas From the Beck Family

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas!

Last weekend started to feel like Christmas. We began at the Christmas tree farm for our annual hunt for the perfect tree. We usually find it right away, but we have to spend time looking around...because that's the fun part.

After our tree find, we went to see my niece Camryn in the Nutcracker ballet. She made a marvelous Russian Dancer. We were only slightly confused when half way through the ballet a Jonas Brothers song came on and these girls in red did a little jazz number. Hmmm...

Charli congratulates her big sissy.

Then, time for decorating. I love a cozy home!

Little Maegann's new room is ALMOST done. Can't wait to post pictures. And then...the nursery is next!!! :) :) :)

Thanksgiving Road Trip to New Mexico!

Lots of catching up to do...We returned Sunday from a WONDERFUL week long vacation. It was my Grandmother's 75th birthday in Las Cruces, New Mexico. We had talked about going but not really committed. Mike knew how much I wanted to go so I got a call at work that we were going to load up the motor home and make a road trip out of it. We had such a great time and it felt so good to just get away. My mother-in-law Judie came with us and our adventure began in Las Vegas...
Mike met up with friends to watch one of our local buddies ride in an endurocross race and Judie and I hit the slot machines. She had better luck than I did. I started to get tired and achy and was pretty much over it...until we found the mall. It was a mother of malls. I could have spent a week in the Macy's.

We parked our motor home at some friends property in Henderson, NV. They spoiled us with breakfast the next morning and Mike made friends with their horse Gumbo. Our friends kept telling Mike that he would bite, but Mike thought he was horse whisperer. This little sucker may look like My Little Pony, but he quickly showed Mike who was boss when he snipped at his arm.

After Vegas, we drove on to Flagstaff, AZ and camped at a K.O.A. Mike and I showed off our skills on the miniature golf course at the camp ground.

From Flagstaff, we drove through Sedona and Mike and Judie took helicopter ride through the mountains.

When Mike was at the motorcycle race with his buddies he bought these adorable onesies for the twins. I don't know what's cuter...the little logos on the front of these, or the fact that I can picture him with a beer in his hand hanging out with the guys stopping at this vendor because he was thinking about his babies. Ohhhh. Cute.

Sedona mountains

We made it to Las Cruces on Tuesday, just in time for Blano's (my Grandma) birthday dinner. We were treated to a seven course meal at this incredible Hacienda off the beaten path. We had the facility to ourselves and writing about it does not describe how beautiful it is. Not only did we enjoy fine dinning and festivities, but it was our first day there and we were excited to catch up with family. Aunts, Uncles, and cousins came from Washington and California. We were also welcomed by our local cousins in Cruces. So much fun!

I was bad with taking pictures once we got to New Mexico. I don't have many of my family. Here we are at dinner with Mike, birthday girl Blano, Dean, and Aunt Joanne.
Mom and I. We are smiling because we're happy to see each other...and because the table behind us was FILLED with jars of candy and chocolate. Yummy!!!

The beautiful dinner table.

Mom and Blano. One of my favorite parts of dinner was hearing everyone share special memories of Blano. We took turns honoring her with stories and recollections.

Mike and I.

Would you look at the belly? This might have been my favorite spot during our time in Cruces. Sitting/laying on Blano's bed talking with all the ladies. I was completely spoiled during the trip, napping often and eating lots.

Mom and Blano in the kitchen Thanksgiving day.

Mike, Judie and I at our cousin's pecan plant.

It was so great to see everyone. I loved watching how the Becks and Blanchards quickly became one family. My only complaint is that the time went by too quickly. Love you family...it was wonderful!

p.s. Road trips in a motor home are the BEST when you are pregnant and you have an excuse to lay down in the back and rest. Mike drove 15 hours home on Saturday. Judie was an awesome co-pilot. I napped, ate, and read. What? I had to take care of the babies.

Thanks Mike, you're my hero :)

It Shouldn't Be Funny

I plan to breastfeed and I don't think there is anything silly or unnatural about it. I am fully aware that pumping is a part of the deal. BUT...every pregnancy magazine I have seen features this goofy lady smiling like she's out for cocktails with her friends. And it kills me. I bust up laughing every time I see this picture:

Nursery Inspirations

People keep asking me what the theme for our nursery will be. I instantly panic because to me theme means Winnie the Pooh or jungle safari. Cute, but not my style. Right now I am in love with chocolate brown and white. Months ago I saw a picture of a friend's nursery (baby Finley), and I have been dreaming about creating something similar ever since. Here are some ideas I like so far. I love rich brown walls with white furniture, the look of this wall with white and silver frames. The babies will have Maegann's old room, which might look similar to the third picture below, as the room has chair rail (minus those blue curtains).

My sister-in-law Tanya is the most talented person I know. She hand makes everything and her girls' room is BEAUTIFUL. Me...not so crafty. But I did find this girl bedding at Target that I love. For our little boy, I would love to find something similar in brown and white. We'll see. We have time. How fun are baby nurseries?

Below: random rooms I saw online

Below: http://www.thelandofnod.com/ , I love how simple this room looks. A bit too pink for our boy, but so cute.

Pregnant 19 Weeks

There certainly is no hiding this belly. I'm starting to feel the babies move and it's the coolest thing. My favorite part of the day is lying in bed at night with Mike, both of us moving our hands around my stomach, guessing which part of them we may be touching. As time goes on I'm already forgetting how hard we worked to get here. I thought I would never forget injections, tears and disappointment. I guess it's not that I've forgotten it, but we have so much to celebrate that it's easy to move forward. Whenever I complain about my back hurting or other people's comments ("you look HUGE!"), I have to quickly remind myself that this is exactly what we wanted. All these things are normal. I'm pregnant. Finally.
